Aftermath review

Aftermath is a charming and engaging Adventure Book Game that throws players into a post-apocalyptic world where humans have vanished, leaving behind a world for animals to reclaim. You play as a band of misfit critters known as "providers" - a guinea pig with anger issues, a fast-talking hamster, a determined mouse, and a mysterious vole. Each character has unique personalities, playstyles, and goals.

The gameplay involves venturing out on story-driven missions, scavenging for resources, and battling bandits and predators. You'll return to your colony, a hub for your group, with supplies and information to help your fellow critters survive. The game encourages building structures and improvements to keep your colony safe and growing.

I really enjoyed the storybook format, which adds a unique visual element and guides the narrative. I found the miniatures to be well-sculpted and fun to paint (though the cat, as one reviewer mentioned, is a bit large!).

However, the biggest hurdle is the rulebook. It's definitely a bit thin and can be confusing at times. Many reviewers echoed this sentiment, and I agree that it's probably best to watch a "how to play" video to get a better understanding of the mechanics.

Even though it's not perfect, I still had a lot of fun playing Aftermath. It's a great game for a group of players who enjoy a bit of a challenge and appreciate a unique and charming story. If you're willing to put in the effort to learn the rules, it's a game that rewards your patience with a satisfying and rewarding experience.
