Familiar Tales
Familiar Tales review
Familiar Tales is a cooperative, deck-building, fantasy adventure for 1-4 players. I've been playing it with my friends for a few weeks now, and it's a blast! The story is captivating and the gameplay is engaging. You take on the role of a wizard's familiar, entrusted with saving and raising a displaced princess. The game is set in a massive world with branching paths and memorable characters. The story unfolds as you explore this world, fighting enemies and completing quests. It's a lot like a choose-your-own-adventure book, but with a fun and engaging tabletop twist.
The game is app-driven, which I normally avoid, but it's actually a big plus in this case. The app does a great job of narrating the story, playing music, and keeping track of the game's mechanics. It also includes a digital rulebook, which is super convenient. I've found the app to be very intuitive and easy to use.
The gameplay itself is a bit more streamlined than other similar games. It’s great if you’re looking for a quick and easy game to play with friends. It doesn't take itself too seriously, and the story is often humorous. However, I have found that it is a bit light on the rules, and I had to make up a few house rules to address some of the unclear areas. There's also a lot of potential for replayability because each campaign is different, and you can choose different paths to explore.
Overall, I highly recommend Familiar Tales to anyone looking for a fun, cooperative storytelling game. It's a great choice for families or groups of friends. I found it to be easy to learn, engaging, and entertaining. The only downside is that the app is required to play, but it’s worth it for the added depth it brings to the game.
