Twilight Inscription review

Twilight Inscription is a fascinating roll-and-write game that brings the epic scope of the Twilight Imperium universe to a smaller, faster-paced experience. While it doesn't replace the full-fledged board game, it captures the essence of strategic galactic conquest in a way that's surprisingly engaging.

The game's complexity can be intimidating at first glance, but it's not as complicated as it seems. The real challenge lies in the strategic decisions you make throughout the game, which is exactly what you want in a good strategy game.

I've played it several times with different groups, and it consistently delivers a satisfying experience. The different races and random bonus cards ensure a high level of replayability, and the strategic depth keeps things interesting even after multiple plays. While a first game might take a little longer, experienced players can finish in about two and a half hours.

I particularly appreciate that Twilight Inscription provides a good balance between luck and strategy. While the dice rolls do play a role, the game's core mechanics rely heavily on smart resource management, tactical planning, and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.

One potential downside is that the included orange chalk markers can leave a dusty residue on your fingers. This might not be a dealbreaker for some, but it's worth considering if you're sensitive to that kind of thing. A simple solution is to replace them with white chalk markers.

Overall, I highly recommend Twilight Inscription for anyone who enjoys strategic roll-and-write games or who is a fan of the Twilight Imperium universe. It's a well-designed game with a lot to offer, and I'm sure I'll continue to enjoy it for many games to come.
