Tokaido Duo
Tokaido Duo review
Tokaido Duo is a charming two-player game that takes the original Tokaido experience and distills it down to a more intimate setting. While the original Tokaido is best with a larger group, Duo shines when you're looking for a relaxing and strategic game for just two players.
The game is built around the concept of three distinct characters: the Pilgrim, the Merchant, and the Artist. Each player controls all three, and you have to make strategic decisions about which character to move on each turn, balancing their individual paths and point-scoring opportunities. I found this aspect of the game to be really engaging, as it requires you to think ahead and anticipate your opponent's moves.
I particularly enjoyed the dice-rolling mechanic, which adds a touch of luck and unpredictability. It's not a game where you can guarantee a win, but there's definitely room for strategic thinking and clever maneuvering. The game is beautifully presented, with stunning artwork that captures the essence of Japanese landscapes and culture. I also appreciate the compact size and well-designed components, making it easy to store and set up.
I did find the game a bit more complex than I initially anticipated. The rulebook can be a bit daunting at first, but once you get into the game, it's fairly easy to grasp. I recommend playing with the instructions handy for the first few rounds, and then you'll be ready to go solo.
Overall, Tokaido Duo is a wonderful two-player game that I highly recommend. It's a perfect choice for couples or close friends looking for a relaxing and engaging experience.
