SpellBook
SpellBook review
SpellBook is a fantastic engine-building game that I've been enjoying immensely. The theme of becoming a wizard, collecting Materia to learn spells, and feeding your familiar is engaging and well-executed. The game is surprisingly easy to pick up, with clear rules and a simple yet strategic gameplay loop.
I found the game to be surprisingly engaging for a game with such a simple core mechanic. You're constantly making choices about which spells to learn, how to manage your resources, and when to push for victory. There's a good amount of luck involved, especially in the early game, but it never feels unfair.
The components are high quality, especially the acrylic Materia tokens, which add a satisfying tactile element to the game. The spell cards are well-designed and thematic, though some players have mentioned that they're a bit thin.
One thing I appreciate is the solo mode, which provides a good challenge and is a great way to learn the game's rules. While some reviewers have noted the lack of direct player interaction, I find the strategic tension of resource management and spell acquisition to be quite compelling.
Overall, SpellBook is a well-designed and entertaining game that I highly recommend to anyone looking for a quick and engaging strategy game with a fantasy theme.
