My City: Roll & Build review

My City: Roll & Build is a delightful roll and write game that has quickly become a favorite in our household. The core gameplay is simple: you roll dice to determine which building piece to draw on your game pad and then strategically place those pieces to build your city, facing different challenges in each episode and chapter.

I was initially drawn to the game because of its connection to the original "My City" board game, and I'm happy to report that this roll and write version captures the spirit of the original while offering its own unique twist. The dice-driven element adds a layer of randomness and tension, as you never know what building pieces will come up. This can be frustrating at times (especially if you're hoping for a specific piece), but it also contributes to the game's replayability.

The game progresses in complexity as you move through the chapters, introducing new challenges and mechanics to keep things interesting. We've particularly enjoyed the way the game encourages strategic planning and resource management, as you have to balance building your city, collecting resources, and defending against bandits. It's a clever and engaging system that keeps us coming back for more.

While the game is fun for all ages, it can be challenging for younger players to grasp all the nuances of the scoring system. However, it's still a great way to introduce them to the concept of strategic thinking and spatial reasoning. I found the game is best played with 2-4 players as playing with a larger group can slow the game down.

Overall, I highly recommend My City: Roll & Build to any fan of roll and write games or the original My City. It's a clever, engaging, and replayable game that offers a great balance of challenge and fun.

Pros:

  • Easy to learn but offers a surprising amount of depth.
  • High replayability thanks to the random dice rolls.
  • Engaging progression system with challenging chapters.
  • Great for solo play or with groups.

Cons:

  • Can be frustrating for younger players.
  • Can drag on with larger groups.
  • No replacement sheets available.
