Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle review

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle is a cooperative deck-building game that throws you right into the heart of the wizarding world. You and your fellow students (up to four players) take on the roles of Harry, Ron, Hermione, or Neville, each with their own unique deck of cards. The goal? To protect Hogwarts from the forces of darkness, defeating villains and solidifying your defenses.

The game itself is broken down into seven chapters, each one mirroring a year at Hogwarts. As you progress through each chapter, you'll encounter familiar villains from the Harry Potter universe, learn new spells, and acquire magical items. The game cleverly adds new mechanics with each chapter, steadily increasing the difficulty, which I really appreciated. It made each playthrough feel fresh and challenging, while still being accessible for newcomers.

I found the cooperative aspect of the game to be really rewarding. You have to work together strategically, coordinating turns and sharing resources, to overcome the challenges posed by the villains and dark arts events. This made for some exciting and suspenseful moments, especially when facing off against Voldemort himself in the later chapters.

The production quality of the game is fantastic. The cards are well-designed and visually appealing, featuring artwork inspired by the books and movies. The tokens are sturdy and have a nice weight to them, adding a touch of authenticity. The box itself is cleverly designed with dividers to keep all the cards organized, which I found very helpful.

While I enjoyed the Harry Potter theme, I think the game would appeal to anyone who enjoys deck-building games or cooperative experiences. It's a great way to introduce new players to the genre, with a relatively simple learning curve and clear rules. The progressive difficulty also ensures that even seasoned players will find it engaging.

I have to admit, I was initially hesitant about the game's reliance on randomness, but ultimately it adds a layer of unpredictability and excitement. It's not always about winning, but about working together to overcome the odds and have a fun, immersive experience.

If you're looking for a cooperative deck-building game with a fantastic Harry Potter theme and solid gameplay, I highly recommend Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle. It's a great choice for family game nights or gatherings with friends, and it's sure to provide hours of entertainment.
