Crusader Rex
Crusader Rex review
I've always been a fan of Columbia Games' block war games, and Crusader Rex definitely lives up to the standard set by classics like Julius Caesar. The game is set in the Levant during the 3rd Crusade, which immediately grabbed my attention. The historical flavor is fantastic, with rules for siege warfare, knight charges, harrying (for light cavalry), and other period-appropriate tactics.
The game is still fairly new to me, so I'm still figuring out all the intricacies of the rules. However, the basic mechanics are familiar and easy to pick up, making it a fun and engaging experience even for new players. The board itself is beautifully crafted, depicting the region from Antioch to Egypt, and the components are solid and high-quality.
One thing that sets Crusader Rex apart from other block war games is its level of strategic depth. The freedom in setup, combined with the varied options for moving your forces, allows for a lot of tactical flexibility. This makes each game feel unique and challenging, even if you've played it before. I'm already thinking about how to improve my strategies, and I can't wait to dive back into the world of Crusader Rex for another game.
