Friedrich
Friedrich review
Friedrich is a fascinating wargame that simulates the Seven Years' War in Europe. I've always been interested in the period, and this game really brings it to life. The rules are surprisingly simple, but the game offers a lot of strategic depth.
One of the things I really appreciate about Friedrich is the asymmetrical gameplay. You can play as Frederick the Great, struggling to defend Prussia against a powerful coalition, or as one of the coalition powers, trying to conquer Prussia. Each side has its own unique strengths and weaknesses, which makes for a very engaging and replayable experience.
The combat system is also very clever. It's based on a card-driven system, and you have to carefully manage your resources to ensure you have the right cards at the right time. The game also features a "destiny deck" which can dramatically alter the course of the game, simulating events like the death of the Czarina Elizabeth.
The components are excellent, and the map is beautiful. I really enjoy the historical accuracy of the game, and it's a great way to learn about this important period in European history.
The biggest drawback of Friedrich is that it can take a long time to play. I've had games that last over 5 hours, but even then, I never get bored. I highly recommend Friedrich to anyone who enjoys wargames, or anyone who is interested in the Seven Years' War.
