Cuba Libre
Cuba Libre review
Cuba Libre is a fantastic addition to the COIN series, offering a unique and engaging experience that's both accessible and strategic. While I've enjoyed other COIN games like Andean Abyss, I found Cuba Libre to be particularly well-polished and streamlined. The smaller map compared to Andean Abyss makes for a more manageable decision space, which is perfect for beginners or those with limited time for gaming sessions.
The game's focus on the Cuban Revolution is fascinating, and the various factions, including Castro's rebels, the Batista government, and the Syndicate, create a complex web of interactions. The card system, which introduces events like "El Che and Raúl" and "Operation Fisherman," adds a dynamic and unpredictable element to the gameplay. I particularly enjoyed the Syndicate's role in the game, with its casinos and ability to influence events with a good dose of mob muscle.
While the rules can seem a bit daunting at first, the player aid cards are incredibly helpful, making it easier to learn and play. I highly recommend Cuba Libre to any wargame enthusiast, especially those seeking a more streamlined and approachable COIN experience. It's definitely a game I'll be playing again and again.
