Successors (Fourth Edition)
Successors (Fourth Edition) review
Successors (Fourth Edition) is a game that has been around for a while, and it's clear that a lot of effort has been put into refining it over the years. The fourth edition includes a lot of new content, which is great, and the new components look excellent, but some of the changes are a bit controversial.
The new Tyche cards are a definite improvement, and the inclusion of more scenarios and generals is a welcome addition. The new map, merging Libya and Cyrene, is a bit of a mixed bag. It's a good way to simplify things, but some players may miss the detail of the old map.
I personally have mixed feelings about the new card size. I think they look nice, but I find the smaller size to be a bit awkward to handle. The art and flavor text on the cards are definitely a step up from the previous editions, though, especially Olympias' card. I'm not a huge fan of the miniatures, but the standees are great and I think they're definitely the way to go.
All in all, this edition is a significant improvement over previous ones. It's a great choice for fans of card-driven wargames, and it's definitely the canonical edition of Successors now. However, if you're just getting started with the game, the older editions are still a good option, especially if you can find them at a lower price. I'm still not entirely convinced about the five-player game, though. I think it might be fun, but it's not really the same experience as the two-to-four player game.
If you're a fan of the period, Successors is a must-have. It's a great way to experience the wars of the Diadochi and to test your skills as a military commander. Just be prepared to put in some time to learn the rules and the mechanics of the game. And be sure to grab a copy of the XL roll-up board if you're a serious player!
