War Chest
War Chest review
War Chest is a fantastic abstract strategy game that's deceptively simple to learn but offers a surprising amount of depth. The core gameplay is about managing your army of units, represented by beautifully crafted, heavy poker chip-like tokens, to capture control points on the board. Each round you draw units from your bag, and you must carefully decide how to use them to outmaneuver your opponent. It’s a game of constant tension, where your decisions can quickly turn the tide of battle.
The game’s biggest strength is its replayability. Every game feels different thanks to the random draw of units, the unique strengths and weaknesses of each unit, and the numerous strategic choices you have to make. I’ve found myself constantly trying out new strategies and combinations, and I haven’t gotten bored yet.
The quality of the components is also top-notch. The box is beautifully designed with a magnetic closure, and the tokens are a joy to handle. However, I agree with some reviewers that the cardboard control markers feel a bit out of place compared to the rest of the components. While the game itself is great, I hope the makers will consider using plastic or metal for the control markers in future editions.
Overall, I highly recommend War Chest to anyone who enjoys strategic games with a good dose of luck. It's a game that is easy to pick up and play, but difficult to master. And with its beautiful components and high replay value, it's sure to be a favorite for years to come.
