7 Wonders Duel review

7 Wonders Duel is a fantastic two-player game that captures the essence of its parent game, 7 Wonders, while streamlining the experience for a more intimate setting. I've played it a bunch of times, and I have to say, it's quickly become one of my favorites for a quick, engaging, and strategic game night.

The game's card-based engine building mechanics are easy to grasp, but offer a surprising depth of strategy. You're building your civilization across three ages, trying to acquire resources, build your military, or advance your scientific knowledge, all while blocking your opponent's progress. The clever card placement system, where cards are revealed in a pyramid-like fashion, adds a delightful layer of tension. You can see some of the cards your opponent might want, giving you the opportunity to take them before they do. And the ability to snag extra cards during the game through wonders and other actions keeps you constantly on your toes.

What I really love about 7 Wonders Duel are the multiple win conditions. You can win by accumulating the most victory points through building and resource management, but you can also win by conquering your opponent through military might, or by achieving scientific dominance. This variety keeps the game fresh and exciting, and there's always that element of surprise wondering which path will lead to victory.

The game itself is wonderfully thematic, immersing you in the world of ancient civilizations. The artwork on the cards is gorgeous, and the components are of high quality. The rules are simple enough to learn quickly, making it perfect for both experienced and casual gamers.

If you're looking for a fast-paced, strategic, and engaging two-player game, 7 Wonders Duel is a must-have. It's perfect for couples, friends, or anyone who wants a fun, challenging experience in a shorter time frame.
