Richard the Lionheart
Richard the Lionheart review
Richard the Lionheart is a game that really surprised me. I'd seen the reviews on BGG and was hesitant to buy it because the average rating was only 6.8. But I'm so glad I did! It's an awesome game that's definitely underrated.
The theme is fantastic. You're playing as either Robin Hood or John Lackland, trying to influence the outcome of Richard's crusade and gain prestige points. There's a lot going on, making it feel like two games in one. You're racing against time, vying for control of towns, stealing cards from your opponents, and even trying to manipulate the neutral faction. It's complex and engaging, and I love the tension that comes from the constant threat of betrayal, even within your own team.
The components are top-notch, too. The miniatures are incredibly detailed, and the board and other components are well-made. The game storage system is also excellent, which is always a bonus.
I do agree with some reviewers that the scoring system is a bit clunky. It can be hard to keep track of who's winning, especially in the later stages of the game. But overall, I think it's a minor flaw in an otherwise excellent game.
If you're a fan of this period in history or just enjoy complex, strategic games with a good dose of intrigue, Richard the Lionheart is definitely worth checking out. I highly recommend it!
