Hyperborea
Hyperborea review
Hyperborea is a game that I've been meaning to try for a while, and I'm glad I finally did. It's a light civilization game with a unique bag-building mechanic that I found surprisingly engaging. The game has a lot going on, with elements of worker placement, battle, area control, and exploration. I was pleasantly surprised by how well it all comes together, and I think the game is perfectly balanced. It's not a complex game, but it is a strategic one, and I found myself constantly weighing my options and trying to figure out the best way to use my limited resources. It's not a "big battle game" as some reviews have called it, but it does have a combat element, but it’s more of a minor element of the game. I enjoy how the game focuses on building your civilization and expanding your territory. The bag building is a nice twist on the typical deck building and allows you to add a variety of different types of cubes to your bag for various different actions. The production quality is also excellent, with well-made miniatures and components. I'm not sure I would have been as impressed if I had paid the original price, but it's a steal at the current price. The game is also very replayable, with different starting positions for each faction and a variety of random objectives to try and complete. If you enjoy strategy games with a euro-style feel, I highly recommend checking out Hyperborea. It's a great game for both solo play and with a group.
