Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis review
Photosynthesis is a delightful strategy game that has quickly become a favorite in our household. The game's premise, centered around growing trees and utilizing sunlight, is charmingly simple yet surprisingly deep. The art is absolutely stunning, with beautifully illustrated trees that come in four distinct types, each with vibrant colors and intricate details. My family was particularly drawn to the 3D nature of the trees, which add a tactile element to the experience.
The game's mechanics are straightforward to grasp, especially if you're familiar with Euro-style games, and even my seven-year-old daughter could play, though she struggled with the strategic aspects. The core gameplay involves collecting light points from your trees, which are influenced by the shadows cast by other trees and the ever-moving sun. You then use these points to purchase seeds and trees, grow them, and eventually harvest them for victory points.
The strategy aspect is moderately challenging, with players having to carefully consider tree placement, growth timing, and light acquisition. It's fun to see how these choices can affect your opponents' strategies. The game also scales well with multiple players, adding a welcome element of chaos and unpredictable outcomes. We particularly enjoyed playing a four-player simulation with two of us controlling two sets of trees each, as it allowed for greater diversity in tree types on the board.
One minor drawback is that the trees can be a bit fragile and sometimes fall apart, especially the blue pine set. However, they are easily put back together, and the issue hasn't detracted from our enjoyment of the game. Another small point is that the box could use a more robust storage solution, as the pieces sometimes shift around during transport.
Overall, Photosynthesis is a highly recommended game for those who enjoy strategy, resource management, and visually appealing games. It offers a satisfying blend of complexity and accessibility, making it perfect for family game nights or evenings with friends. We often find ourselves gravitating towards this game on cold winter nights, as it evokes a sense of warmth and tranquility with its forest theme and gorgeous artwork.
