Onitama
Onitama review
Onitama is a game that I've found myself reaching for more and more lately. It's a perfect balance of simplicity and strategic depth, making it enjoyable for both casual and experienced gamers. The core gameplay is based on a simple premise: two players face off on a 5x5 board, each with five pawns and a master pawn, and use cards to determine their moves. The cards change every turn, creating a constantly shifting landscape of possibilities and forcing you to adapt your strategies on the fly.
What sets Onitama apart is the ingenious way it integrates card-based movement into a game that feels strategic and engaging. You're always thinking ahead, trying to anticipate your opponent's moves and strategize your own, but you also have to be flexible and adapt to the ever-changing card pool. The game is surprisingly quick, typically taking around 10-15 minutes, making it perfect for a quick game or as a filler between longer sessions.
I also appreciate the high quality of the components. The pieces are well-made and the neoprene mat feels premium. The magnetic box is a nice touch, keeping everything secure and organized. While the game itself is excellent, I would recommend the base game for now. The expansions, while adding variety, may add unnecessary complexity that detracts from the core gameplay.
If you're looking for a fun and strategic game that's easy to learn but hard to master, Onitama is definitely worth checking out. It's a great option for two players who enjoy a good mental challenge and a fast-paced game.
