My Island
My Island review
My Island is a legacy game that takes inspiration from the popular "My City". Both games feature the development of a unique space, but My Island focuses on creating an island from interconnected hexagons. The game spans 24 individual games, each with new rules and game materials that permanently change your island.
I've been playing My Island with my family and we've been enjoying it. It's a good game for a group that can commit to repeated play sessions, as the legacy element really shines when you can track the evolution of your island across multiple games. The gameplay is relatively simple, but the strategic decisions involved in tile placement can be quite engaging.
While I haven't played My City, many reviews point out the similarities, with some even suggesting My Island is a less enjoyable experience. However, I personally find the hexagons to be a nice change of pace, and the legacy aspect adds a level of replayability that I appreciate. There is an eternal game mode that allows for continued play after you've completed the legacy campaign, but it seems to lack the depth and complexity of the legacy portion.
My Island's biggest drawback is the commitment required. The legacy elements are permanent, so you can only play through the campaign once. This is a significant investment, both in time and potentially in emotional attachment to your island. However, the experience is definitely worth it if you have a group that enjoys collaborative storytelling and strategic tile placement.
