Hnefatafl review

I recently picked up Hnefatafl, also known as The Viking Game, and I'm having a blast! It's a simple, yet surprisingly strategic game that harkens back to a time when board games were about more than just rolling dice. The premise is straightforward: the king and his twelve soldiers must escape to one of the four corners of the board while fending off the twenty-four attackers. The gameplay itself feels a bit like a cross between chess and checkers, with the unique element of the king's escape goal adding an interesting dynamic.

The set I received is beautifully made of wood, which adds a nice tactile element to the experience. The historical background is fascinating, and the game definitely has educational value – it's a great way to introduce kids to strategy games. I've played it with my nephews (ages 9-17) and they all picked it up quickly. The game itself is fast-paced and engaging, and we haven't had a single game last more than half an hour.

However, there are a few downsides. The pieces are admittedly a little light, and I can see how they might get knocked off the board easily if you're not careful. I'm thinking about adding some magnets to the bottom to fix this. Also, the rules are a bit sparse. Some people have mentioned having trouble with the instructions, but I found them pretty intuitive.

Overall, I'd highly recommend Hnefatafl to anyone looking for a fun, strategic game with a rich history. It's a great choice for families, as well as anyone who enjoys a good challenge. Just be prepared for some light pieces!
