Dungeons & Dragons: Waterdeep – Dungeon of the Mad Mage Board Game
Dungeons & Dragons: Waterdeep – Dungeon of the Mad Mage Board Game review
I've been a fan of the Dungeons & Dragons board game series since the release of Castle Ravenloft, and I've been eagerly awaiting the release of Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage. I was a little hesitant at first due to some negative reviews about typos and confusing rules, but I'm happy to report that my copy (purchased in April 2024) seems to have fixed those issues. The rules are clear, and the game is a significant improvement over Wrath of Ashardalon with more interesting mechanics. I especially love the evolving campaign deck, which gradually adds and removes cards as you progress through the adventures.
I opted for the standard edition with unpainted figures, and while it did take a while to paint them, I don't regret it. The figures in the premium edition come with translucent parts, but I think my solid figures turned out nicely. I was a little confused by the U-shaped magic sword figure at first, thinking it was missing a base, but it actually slots into the back of the Halaster (the Mad Mage) figure. So, don't try to modify it like I did!
Overall, I'm very happy with Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage. It's a great game for solo players or groups of 2-5, and it's a fun way to experience a Dungeons & Dragons adventure without a Dungeon Master. I highly recommend it!
