Clockwork Wars
Clockwork Wars review
Clockwork Wars is a captivating board game that has quickly become a favorite in our gaming group. The game's premise of an alternate universe where magic and steam-era technology clash is incredibly imaginative, and the artwork is stunning. I love the steampunk aesthetic! The game is centered around area control, where players compete for control of territories that contain valuable resources, but there's so much more to it.
Clockwork Wars offers a surprising amount of depth for a game that, at first glance, might seem simple. The hidden deployment of units adds a layer of tension and strategic thinking, and the card-based espionage system introduces an intriguing element of deception.
The technology tree is a standout feature. The research aspect is very engaging, and it constantly keeps you on your toes as you explore the three disciplines of Sorcery, Science, and Religion. I particularly enjoy the decision-making aspect of deciding where to deploy your workers. Do you go for the victory points, or do you need more resource tokens? These decisions are never easy, and the game's replayability comes from the different strategies you can employ.
I highly recommend Clockwork Wars to anyone looking for a deep, strategic game with a unique setting and theme. It's a great choice for both experienced gamers and those new to the hobby. Despite its complexity, the game's rules are well-written and easy to understand. It's a bit of a longer game, but the time flies by when you're immersed in the world of Clockwork Wars.
