Cosmic Frog review

Cosmic Frog is unlike any other board game I've played. It's a unique blend of strategy, collection, and a dash of chaotic fun. The premise is quirky: you control a giant, immortal frog that gathers terrain from shattered planets to help the "First Ones" rebuild their world.

The game's core mechanics are simple enough to grasp, but there are enough twists and turns to keep you on your toes. From harvesting land and filling your frog's gullet to leaping into the Aether to deposit your loot, there's a constant sense of forward momentum. But the real thrill comes from the unpredictability of the Aether. Waves of Aether Flux mutate your frog, forcing you to adapt your strategy, and Splinters of Aeth, unpredictable pieces of the old world, can wreak havoc on the game board.

The art is stunning. The frogs are wonderfully whimsical, and the entire game has a distinct and captivating aesthetic. The production quality is excellent, too, with thick cards, a double-stitched neoprene game mat, and chunky crystals that feel fantastic to handle.

Cosmic Frog isn't for everyone. It's a bit more complex than some board games, and the setup can be time-consuming. But once you get past that initial hurdle, you'll be rewarded with an incredibly unique and engaging experience. The game's variability ensures that no two playthroughs will be the same, and the competitive tension, especially when trying to steal land from your opponents, adds an extra layer of excitement.

If you're looking for something completely different and are willing to embrace a little chaos, Cosmic Frog is a must-try. It's a game that will leave a lasting impression and, in my opinion, has rightfully earned a spot in my top ten.
