Anno 1800: The Board Game review

I recently picked up Anno 1800: The Board Game and I'm really enjoying it. It's a complex, strategy-heavy game, but in a good way. I've played quite a few modern strategy games, and this one definitely stands out. There are so many different resources to use and strategies to explore. You're constantly building up your industry to develop your home island, and you have to fulfill the needs of your population. They start out wanting bread and clothing, but soon demand luxuries like fur coats and steam engines. It's really satisfying to watch your island grow and develop.

One of the things I love about this game is how it's full of choices. Every turn, you have to decide how to spend your actions and resources. Do you focus on production, trade, or expansion? There's no right or wrong answer, and that's part of what makes the game so compelling. I also really appreciate the fact that each game is different. The cards you draw and the choices your opponents make will have a major impact on the game, so no two games are ever the same.

It's definitely not a game for everyone, though. It's a bit long, and the setup takes a while. However, if you're a fan of worker placement games or economic engine builders, I highly recommend checking it out.
