Tribes of the Wind review

Tribes of the Wind is a visually stunning game that instantly caught my eye. The artwork, reminiscent of Studio Ghibli, immediately transported me to a post-apocalyptic world where players work to rebuild civilization amidst the ruins. The core gameplay is a mix of tile-laying, resource management, and card drafting, with a unique twist: the backs of your opponents' cards influence what you can play. This creates a dynamic interplay, making each turn feel fresh and exciting.

The game itself is relatively easy to grasp but has a surprisingly deep level of strategy. I really enjoyed the "solitaire" aspect of having my own board to optimize, but the interconnectedness of players' cards adds a layer of tension and interaction. It's not a game where you can simply focus on your own strategy; you need to be aware of what your opponents are doing and how their choices might affect your own moves.

While the rulebook can be a bit confusing at first, I found that things clicked quickly once we started playing. The game flows smoothly once you get past the initial learning curve. There's a good balance between planning and reacting to the ever-changing game state.

The components are high quality, and the game looks beautiful on the table. I do wish the cardboard tokens were wooden, but it's a minor quibble. I appreciate the included cardholders, which help keep things organized.

Overall, Tribes of the Wind is a fun and engaging game that I recommend to anyone looking for a mid-weight strategy game with a unique mechanic and beautiful art. It's definitely worth checking out if you enjoy tile-laying, resource management, and a touch of environmental theme.
