The Siege of Runedar review

The Siege of Runedar is a cooperative game where you play as dwarves defending a fortress against waves of orcs, goblins, and trolls. The game is surprisingly challenging, even on easy difficulty, and the molded plastic fortress included in the box is a really cool feature. The game does have a steep learning curve with multiple ways to lose and only one way to win, but it's a rewarding experience to work together and overcome the odds.

One of the things I found really interesting was the deck-building system. You build a custom deck of 12 cards, upgrading your weapons and tools as the game progresses. This system is a nice way to add some variety to the gameplay and makes each game feel a little different.

However, some aspects of the game didn't quite work for me. I found the lack of actual defense of the fortress disappointing. While you are defending the walls, the orcs and goblins are able to move over them unimpeded, and the game feels more like a whack-a-mole situation than a true siege. The cardboard pieces also felt a little underwhelming for the price, and I think the game would have been much better with miniatures.

Overall, The Siege of Runedar is a decent game, but it has some flaws that keep it from being truly great. If you're looking for a cooperative game with a strong sense of theme and a challenging experience, this might be worth checking out. But if you're looking for a more immersive and engaging siege game, you might want to look elsewhere.
