Pan Am
Pan Am review
I was initially drawn to Pan Am because of my love for aviation and the nostalgic charm of the Pan Am brand. I have fond memories of my family friend's daughter, who was a Pan Am flight attendant in Lockerbie, and the game brought back those warm memories. Despite some initial skepticism about the complexity of the rules, I found that Pan Am is a beautifully designed and engaging game. The rulebook, which is surprisingly clear and well-written, does a fantastic job of immersing players in the game's theme and history.
The game itself is a delightful blend of strategic planning and chance. Players compete to build their own airline empire, vying for lucrative landing rights, acquiring planes, and strategically investing in Pan Am stock. The auction mechanic for airports and planes is well-implemented, adding a layer of excitement to the gameplay. The event cards, which represent historical events that impacted the airline industry, also contribute to the game's replayability. Each round feels fresh and different, offering a unique challenge to players.
While some reviewers found the game a bit overwhelming at first, I found the learning curve to be quite manageable. The components are well-made and visually appealing, with a distinct vintage aesthetic that adds to the game's charm. The game board, planes, and destination cards are all beautifully crafted, bringing the era of air travel to life.
Pan Am is a fantastic game for those who enjoy strategy, negotiation, and a bit of chance. It's not overly complex, and once you understand the basic rules, the gameplay becomes very intuitive. If you're looking for a game with a unique theme, high-quality components, and plenty of replayability, I highly recommend giving Pan Am a try. Just be prepared to spend a couple of hours enjoying the ride!
