Abyss
Abyss review
Abyss is a game that has been on my radar for a while, but I never quite pulled the trigger. I’m glad I finally did, because this is a really fun game! The artwork is absolutely stunning, and the components are top-notch. The gameplay is simple to learn but has a surprising amount of depth. It's a great choice for gamers and non-gamers alike. I really enjoy the press-your-luck mechanic of recruiting allies. You’re constantly trying to balance the risk of going deeper into the Abyss with the potential reward of getting the right allies. I found the game to be very well-balanced, with no one player consistently dominating.
I do have a few minor nitpicks. I agree with some of the other reviewers that it’s a bit frustrating not to have an active count of player points on the board. The rooms in the game are a nice balance mechanism, but I wish they appeared more often. Overall, though, these are very minor complaints.
If you’re looking for a beautiful, fun, and strategic game, then Abyss is definitely worth checking out. I’m really glad I finally got a chance to play it, and I know I’ll be playing it for years to come.
