Struggle for Catan
Struggle for Catan review
I've been a Catan fan for years, and I was excited to try out "The Struggle for Catan" when I saw it. It's a card game based on the original Settlers of Catan, and it's a much faster game, taking about 30-45 minutes. I have to say, I'm pleasantly surprised. It's a lot of fun, and it captures the spirit of the original game while simplifying things.
The core mechanics are familiar: you collect resources, build settlements, roads, and cities, and earn victory points. What's different is that this game is dice-less, and resources are based on developments, which makes it less luck-dependent than the board game. There are also some interesting twists, like the ability to steal developments from other players.
I've enjoyed playing this game both with two players and with a larger group (it can be played with up to six players with two sets). It's a great choice for a quick game, and it's easy to learn. It's definitely worth picking up if you're a Catan fan.
One thing to note is that I've read some reviews where people have mentioned that the game can get repetitive after a few plays. I haven't found this to be the case yet, but I can see how it might become an issue. Overall, though, I think this is a fun and engaging game that's great for Catan fans and newcomers alike.
