Agricola: Family Edition
Agricola: Family Edition review
I was eager to try Agricola: Family Edition, having heard it was a simplified version of the original, which I’ve always wanted to play but was intimidated by its complexity. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the components – the board, pieces, and wooden tokens are all beautifully designed and sturdy. The instructions are clear and well-organized, making it easy to learn the basics. While the game is turn-based, with 14 rounds, each round is relatively short, which keeps the game engaging.
The game mechanics are streamlined, removing some of the more complex elements of the original, like stone and vegetables. Instead of player boards, you build your farm directly on the game board, making it less overwhelming for newer players. The scoring system is straightforward, with only beggar tokens leading to negative points. The game is still challenging, requiring strategic thinking and resource management, but it’s much more accessible to younger players and families.
I really appreciate the way Agricola: Family Edition balances simplicity with depth. While the game is less complicated than the original, it still offers a satisfying challenge. We’ve enjoyed playing it with our kids, who love the theme of building a farm and the satisfaction of seeing their farms grow. I definitely recommend this game to anyone who loves the original but wants a simpler version, or to families looking for a strategic board game that everyone can enjoy.
