Reavers of Midgard review

I've been eyeing Reavers of Midgard for a while now, ever since it popped up on Kickstarter. I'm a big fan of worker placement games, and the Viking theme really appealed to me. However, I was hesitant to back it because I thought it might be too similar to Champions of Midgard, which I already own. But when I saw it finally hit retail, I couldn't resist picking up a copy.

I'm glad I did. Reavers of Midgard is a fantastic game that stands on its own, even if it shares some DNA with its predecessor. The worker placement mechanic is solid, but it's the "follow" action that really sets this game apart. Basically, whenever a player takes an action, everyone else has the option to take the same action, albeit with slightly less benefits. This creates a constant sense of urgency and player interaction, which I really enjoy. I've never played a worker placement game where everyone feels so engaged.

The game is beautifully produced, with vibrant colors and stunning artwork. The components are all top-notch, especially the dice, which are beautifully crafted and distinct. It's a real pleasure to unbox and set up.

The gameplay is straightforward and easy to learn, but there's a good amount of depth to the strategy. You'll need to carefully manage your resources and make tough decisions about which actions to take and which to pass on. The game also has a great balance of luck and skill, which keeps things interesting.

I would say that the game is best enjoyed at a higher player count, ideally four players. The game flows much better with more players, as everyone gets to take more actions and there's less downtime.

Reavers of Midgard isn't perfect. There are some minor issues with the insert and rulebook, but nothing that really detracts from the overall experience. The replayability is also a little lower than I expected, but it's still a fun game that I'll be pulling out regularly.

Overall, I highly recommend Reavers of Midgard. It's a beautiful, engaging, and strategic game that's sure to please any worker placement fan. If you're looking for a game with lots of player interaction and a great theme, look no further.
