Mythotopia
Mythotopia review
Mythotopia is a deck-building, area control game set in a medieval fantasy world that definitely has its charms. It borrows heavily from A Few Acres of Snow, but with enough differences to make it feel fresh. You're customizing your deck by drafting cards and expanding into provinces, each with its own unique card. The game is full of strategic decisions, and the variable victory point cards add an element of surprise to each play.
One of the things I really appreciate about Mythotopia is the variety of actions you can take on your turn. You can build cities, roads, and castles, attack neighboring provinces, or draft Improvement cards to boost your abilities. There's always something to do, and the choices you make can significantly affect the outcome of the game.
However, the game does have its downsides. The setup can be a bit fiddly, and the game can drag on if players are all vying for victory points. Some reviewers have also mentioned that the initial card draw can be unbalanced, giving some players a significant advantage. While the theme is fantasy, the artwork and components are a bit bland.
Overall, Mythotopia is a decent game, but not without its flaws. If you're a fan of Martin Wallace's work and you enjoy deck-building and area control games, it's definitely worth checking out. However, if you're looking for a game with a more streamlined gameplay or a captivating theme, you might want to look elsewhere.
