Lords of Hellas review

Lords of Hellas is a unique and engaging game that takes players to the Dark Ages of Greece, where mighty Gods wield advanced technology. I was immediately drawn in by the beautifully crafted miniatures, which truly immerse you in the game's universe. The four different paths to victory ensure that every game plays differently, and you can always find a strategy that suits your play style. The combat is simple but not boring, and the game can be played fairly quickly once everyone knows the rules (around 60 minutes). It's remarkably easy to learn, and the theme makes the rules seem intuitive. There's a plethora of expansions available, so you can customize the game to your liking (I highly recommend the Terrain Expansion). However, I find the quest system to be a bit underwhelming, and I wish there was a more direct way to win by completing quests. I also yearn for the ability to paint the miniatures, which would further enhance the game's visual appeal.

My experience with Lords of Hellas has been largely positive, though I have encountered some common criticisms shared by other players. The game's box is indeed too small for all the components, which can lead to some storage issues. Additionally, I agree with some reviewers that certain game mechanics, such as fortifying, seem unnecessary and could be streamlined. While the monuments are visually stunning, they're not always fully built, which diminishes their impact on the game.

Despite these minor shortcomings, Lords of Hellas remains a fantastic game that offers a unique blend of strategy, combat, and exploration. The monster hunting mechanic is particularly engaging, and the game's theme is well-implemented. If you enjoy games like Scythe, Kemet, Blood Rage, or Inis, then Lords of Hellas is definitely worth checking out. I'm confident that I'll be playing this game for years to come.
