Excavation Earth review

Excavation Earth is a unique and engaging economic game set in a future where Earth has become a treasure trove of artifacts for alien explorers. The game's mechanics are definitely on the heavier side, but they offer a satisfying challenge for experienced gamers.

The initial setup felt a bit overwhelming, as the instructions could be clearer and more consistent in their terminology. I found myself relying on a YouTube video to clarify some of the rules, and I even ended up writing my own simplified version of the instructions. However, once we grasped the basics, the game really came to life.

The gameplay is fast-paced and strategic. Players draft cards to perform actions, moving their explorers around a world map, excavating artifacts, and engaging in market manipulation. There's a satisfying sense of achievement when you manage to pull off a complex combo and reap the rewards.

The game's solo mode, designed by Nick Shaw and Dávid Turczi, is also very well-done, providing a challenging and engaging experience for solo players. The game's replayability is excellent, thanks to the random setup and the ever-changing market conditions.

Overall, Excavation Earth is a complex and rewarding game that offers a unique blend of economic strategy and science fiction themes. While the learning curve is steep, the game is ultimately very engaging and offers plenty of opportunities for strategic decision-making. I would highly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys euro-style games with a focus on economic strategy. Just be prepared to dedicate some time to mastering the rules.
