DOOM: The Board Game review

DOOM: The Board Game is a blast from the past for any fan of the iconic franchise. It's a cooperative board game where 1-4 players take on the roles of space marines fighting off hordes of demons controlled by a single "Invader" player. The game features two distinct operations, Black Bishop and Exodus, each containing six missions that offer plenty of replayability.

The game's components are top-notch. The miniatures are incredibly detailed and well-made, making them a joy to paint and display. The game board is modular and double-sided, giving you a good deal of flexibility in setting up the battlefield. The cards and tokens are also of high quality, and the whole package really feels premium.

Gameplay is fast-paced and intense. The rules are surprisingly easy to pick up despite the initial seeming complexity. The game is balanced well, with neither side having a clear advantage. Some missions may lean towards the marines, while others favor the invader. The combat system is simple but engaging, and there's plenty of strategy involved in choosing your actions and managing your resources.

I particularly enjoy the initiative deck, which adds a level of suspense to each round. You never know who will go first, so you have to be prepared for anything. The game also encourages a lot of creative strategy in terms of setting up your own missions and custom rules. Our group enjoys using the "Doom: Hurt Me Plenty Edition" variant, which adds a slight challenge to the game and keeps things fresh. The only real complaint I have is that the game can be a bit fiddly to set up and tear down due to the number of components. But honestly, it's a minor complaint, given the overall quality of the game.

Overall, DOOM: The Board Game is a great addition to any board game collection. It's a fun, exciting, and challenging game that is sure to please any fan of the Doom franchise. While it may not be the best in its genre, it's still a solid and highly enjoyable game, and it is worth every penny. If you're looking for a cooperative board game with a high level of replayability and great thematic depth, you can't go wrong with DOOM: The Board Game. Just be prepared to spend a little time on setup and tear down.
