Batman: The Dark Knight Returns – The Game
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns – The Game review
This game, based on Frank Miller's iconic graphic novel, puts you in the role of a grizzled, aging Batman fighting to save Gotham from a chaotic onslaught of mutants, corrupt cops, and a seemingly unstoppable Joker. It's a solo experience focused on attrition, as you try to survive and complete your missions, not level up or become more powerful.
The game is structured around "books" that act as individual campaigns, with each one adding new rules and challenges. You can play these as standalone missions or link them together for a continuous, epic playthrough. However, I found myself frustrated with the increasing complexity of the rules as the game progressed. It felt like too many extra rules were tacked on, especially in Book 2, where you have to remember to place mutants near clue spots. This added complexity, coupled with the lackluster rulebook, made the game feel more like a chore than a fun experience.
The game also suffers from a swinginess issue, particularly in the harder difficulty levels. I found myself rage-quitting several times due to the unpredictable nature of the game's mechanics. It's a shame because the core concept of an aging Batman struggling to survive against overwhelming odds is really intriguing.
Unfortunately, the game also appears to have some issues with its product description. Several reviewers received the standard edition instead of the version with miniatures that was shown in the photos. So, be sure to check carefully before purchasing to avoid disappointment.
Overall, while the core idea of the game is compelling, the execution falls short. The overwhelming rules complexity, coupled with the swinginess of the harder difficulties, detracts from the enjoyment of the experience. I would recommend reading the graphic novel first, as it offers a far more rewarding experience than this game does.
