Axis & Allies: Europe 1940
Axis & Allies: Europe 1940 review
Axis & Allies: Europe 1940 is a fantastic addition to the Axis & Allies family, offering a more nuanced and detailed experience compared to its predecessors. The inclusion of neutral countries adds a whole new layer of strategy, with the ability to invade them and sway their allegiance. I particularly appreciate the addition of France and Italy as playable factions, which adds depth and historical accuracy to the game. The inclusion of mechanized infantry and tactical bombers further enhances the gameplay, and the large board (which can be combined with the Pacific 1940 version for an epic Global 1940 experience) is incredibly impressive.
While the game is a big improvement overall, I have to agree with some reviewers that the quality of the pieces could be better. Some reviewers mentioned the pieces being hard to distinguish and the submarines being too flimsy, which are valid points. I also wish the game included the IPCs (the "monopoly money" used in the game) as that would eliminate the need to keep score with pen and paper or buy separate currency.
Despite these minor drawbacks, Axis & Allies: Europe 1940 remains an excellent choice for fans of the franchise and anyone seeking a challenging and immersive World War II strategy game. The gameplay is engaging, the historical context is well-presented, and the overall experience is satisfying. I would highly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys strategic board games and has an interest in World War II history.
