Applejack
Applejack review
Applejack is a delightful tile-placement game from Uwe Rosenberg, the mastermind behind Agricola and many other acclaimed titles. The premise is simple: you're helping Applejack and his daughter plant an orchard, harvest apples, and collect honey. But the strategic depth belies its approachable nature.
The core gameplay is engaging. You choose a tree tile from the central board, paying for it with honey tokens. Placing these tiles strategically is crucial, as the beehives on the tiles need to be adjacent to other beehives to earn honey. The placement also dictates your harvesting strategy. The Applejack die rolls, and if it lands on an apple icon, you can collect honey if you've arranged your apples in a satisfyingly efficient way.
What I particularly enjoyed about Applejack is the delightful blend of spatial puzzle and resource management. It's not a cutthroat game, but there's definitely a sense of satisfaction in outsmarting your opponents and building a thriving orchard. The components are well-made, the artwork is charming, and the game is quick to learn but offers plenty of replayability.
If you're looking for a light-to-medium weight game that's perfect for families or a casual game night, Applejack is a real treat. It's not as complex as some of Rosenberg's other games, but it still provides a satisfying and enjoyable experience. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys tile-placement games with a touch of strategy and a healthy dose of charm.
