Stronghold
Stronghold review
Stronghold is a unique and engaging game that puts you in the heart of a medieval siege. As either the defender or the attacker, you'll face a challenging and strategic battle for control of the castle. The game is very thematic, immersing you in the world of medieval warfare with its detailed board, components, and gameplay mechanics.
The game board is a beautiful representation of the stronghold and surrounding terrain, and the components are of high quality. The rules, while complex, are well-written and provide a solid foundation for gameplay. As the defender, you'll have to carefully manage your resources and defenses to hold off the relentless waves of attackers. As the attacker, you'll need to carefully plan your assaults and use your resources wisely to break through the stronghold's defenses.
One of the biggest strengths of Stronghold is its replayability. There are a number of different card decks for the attacker, allowing for varied strategies and challenges. The game also supports both two-player and four-player modes, although the four-player mode can feel a little less interactive than the two-player mode.
The game is definitely not for the faint of heart, though. It can take a while to learn the rules, and the game itself can be quite lengthy (around 3 hours for new players). However, if you're looking for a challenging and strategic game with a deep theme, Stronghold is definitely worth checking out.
One minor critique is that the game can be prone to "analysis paralysis," particularly for the defender who has a vast array of options at their disposal. This can lead to long turns and a feeling of overwhelm, especially for newer players. That said, the game provides separate rulebooks for the defender and attacker, which helps to mitigate this issue.
Overall, Stronghold is a fantastic game that offers a unique and immersive experience. If you're a fan of strategic games with a deep theme and enjoy a good challenge, you'll definitely want to give Stronghold a try. Just be prepared for a steep learning curve and a lengthy playtime. The game is available for around $65, and there's also a new second edition being released soon.
