Smash Up: Big in Japan
Smash Up: Big in Japan review
Smash Up: Big in Japan is a fun expansion that brings some new and interesting mechanics to the game. The four factions are all based on Japanese pop culture, and they're all pretty well done. The Itty Critters (Pokemon), Mega Troopers (Power Rangers), Magical Girls (Sailor Moon) and Kaiju (Godzilla) are all fun to play, and they all have their own unique strengths and weaknesses.
The biggest new addition to the game is the Titan cards, which are basically super-powered abilities that can be played once certain conditions are met. I found the Titan cards to be a lot of fun, and they definitely add a new layer of strategy to the game. However, the Titan cards are only available for the factions in this expansion, which can make it feel a little unbalanced when playing against other expansions. I think that this is a design flaw that could have been fixed with a little more planning. That being said, the overall experience of this expansion is positive and worth picking up for any Smash Up fan.
As a little side note, the Titan cards are actually the dividers that come in the box! This was a little confusing at first, but it's actually a pretty clever solution.
If you're a fan of Smash Up, I highly recommend checking out Big in Japan. It's a fun, thematic expansion that adds a lot of new content to the game.
