Once Upon a Time: The Storytelling Card Game review

Once Upon a Time: The Storytelling Card Game is a delightful game that brings out the storyteller in everyone. I've played both the second and third editions, and I'm happy to report that the third edition is an improvement in many ways. The artwork is softer and more storybookish, the card layout is easier to use, and the new card set expands the game's possibilities.

The basic premise is simple: each player has a hand of cards representing characters, items, events, places, and aspects, along with a secret "Happy Ever After" ending card. The Storyteller begins by creating a tale, weaving together the elements on their cards. Other players can interrupt the Storyteller by playing a card to steer the story in their own direction. The first player to incorporate all their cards into the narrative and reach their ending card wins.

I've found that the stories in Once Upon a Time are often more entertaining than the act of winning. The creative possibilities are endless, and the game encourages players to think on their feet and adapt to unexpected turns. It's a great game for families and friends who enjoy collaborative storytelling and a bit of friendly competition.

However, the game does have its drawbacks. The box is quite large and cumbersome, and the lack of a card holder can make organization a bit of a challenge. Also, some players might find the interrupt mechanic frustrating, especially if they're not able to get their story going.

Overall, I highly recommend Once Upon a Time. It's a fun, engaging, and creative game that's sure to spark your imagination. Just be prepared for some hilarious and unexpected twists along the way!
