Freshwater Fly review

Freshwater Fly is a charming and engaging game that takes the familiar world of fishing and turns it into a captivating board game experience. I've always been a fan of well-integrated themes in games, and Freshwater Fly absolutely nails it. The gameplay revolves around the classic mechanics of dice drafting and set collection, but with a twist – you're actually casting your line, hooking fish, and reeling them in!

The game board is beautifully designed and doubles as a solo mode, which is a major plus for me. The components are high quality, with a particular shout-out to the player boards. The way the reels physically transform as you catch fish is truly ingenious and adds a tactile layer to the game that's quite satisfying.

The rules are generally well-written and easy to grasp, though I did find the drifting mechanism a bit confusing at first. Once you realize it's essentially a guaranteed catch with the right fly color, it becomes much clearer. I also found the iconography to be a bit cumbersome and wish there were more visual aids in the rulebook.

Despite the low player interaction, I find the game incredibly fun, especially in solo mode. The campaign-style solo mode is incredibly well-designed and offers a satisfying progression through different challenges. The replayability is excellent thanks to the various player boards and the ever-changing fish sets.

Overall, Freshwater Fly is a delightful and surprisingly strategic game. The theme integration is brilliant, the components are top-notch, and the solo mode is an absolute gem. While the rules could benefit from more visual clarity, it's a minor point that doesn't detract from the overall experience. If you're a fan of solo games or looking for a unique and engaging board game with a clever theme, I highly recommend giving Freshwater Fly a try.
