Comuni
Comuni review
Comuni is a strategic board game set in 12th-century Italy, where you take on the role of a powerful Comune leader. Your goal is to grow your city's wealth by building structures that represent the economic, military, cultural, and religious life of your city.
What I really like about Comuni is the bidding system used to acquire "projects of buildings" (cards) that you can then transform into actual buildings and walls. This adds a layer of competition and strategy, as you have to predict what other players might want and how you can outbid them.
The different types of buildings and the resources they provide add even more depth to the game. You need to carefully consider which buildings will give you the most advantages in the bidding phase, in transforming projects into buildings, and in other aspects of the game.
I also appreciate the inclusion of invasions. These events add a sense of urgency and require you to think about both your own city's defense and how you can collaborate with other players to defeat the common enemy.
Overall, Comuni is a fantastic game for players who enjoy strategic board games. It's well-designed, offers plenty of depth and replayability, and provides a good challenge for both intermediate and advanced Euro gamers. While I wouldn't recommend it for complete beginners, it could be a great step up for those looking to move beyond basic Euro games.
