The U.S. Civil War
The U.S. Civil War review
The U.S. Civil War is a 2-player strategic-level wargame that captures the essence of the American Civil War. The game covers the entire conflict from 1861 to 1865 on a massive 30” x 44” map, beautifully depicting the Southeastern United States. Each turn represents a period of 2-3 months, with four action phases per turn, allowing for strategic maneuvering and tactical battles.
I've been a fan of Civil War games for a while, and this one really impressed me. The game mechanics are well-designed and create a rewarding experience. The strength-point system, representing approximately 5,000 soldiers, adds a strategic layer to the game, while the inclusion of historical figures, like Grant, Sherman, Lee, and Jackson, adds a layer of depth and realism. The game does a good job of balancing the need for strategic planning with the importance of tactical decisions.
The components are excellent. The mounted maps are stunning and the counters are well-designed. The rules, while detailed, are clear and easy to follow, especially for those who have experience with wargames. The inclusion of shorter scenarios that cover 1861, 1862, and 1863 provides a great way to get into the game or try out different strategies. While the rulebook might seem hefty at 40 pages, it's surprisingly accessible if you are familiar with wargames.
I was particularly impressed with the historical leader system, which adds a unique element to the game, especially for those who enjoy historical accuracy. The game also includes a variety of other elements like ironclads, naval battles, leader promotions, forts, and commerce raiders. I also appreciate the game's developer, Mark Simonitch, for being actively involved with the community and answering questions on Board Game Geek.
Overall, The U.S. Civil War is a fantastic addition to any wargamer's collection. It is a truly engaging and challenging game that offers a deep and immersive experience for fans of the American Civil War.
