Rise of Empires
Rise of Empires review
Rise of Empires is a civilization-building game that takes players from the Ancient Age to the Modern Age. The game focuses on war, economics, science, and diplomacy, with players striving to build the most powerful empire.
I found the gameplay to be quite engaging and strategic, particularly the A-B turn mechanic where you plan two moves ahead. This aspect, unique to many of Martin Wallace's games, adds a layer of depth and tension.
While the game can be long, with three to four hours being the norm, I found it to be a rewarding experience. The various paths to victory, ranging from city building and empire expansion to scientific progress and trade, ensure that each game feels different and keeps things interesting.
However, I must agree with some of the reviewers who found the game's presentation lacking. The map board is rather bland, and the components, while sturdy, are not particularly impressive. The thematic connection to real-world history also feels somewhat abstract, though this is to be expected from a game with a focus on strategic gameplay.
Despite these drawbacks, I thoroughly enjoy Rise of Empires. The gameplay is excellent, the decisions are weighty, and the tension is palpable. It's a game that requires careful planning and strategic thinking, and those who are willing to invest the time will be rewarded with a truly engaging and challenging experience.
