Commands & Colors: Samurai Battles

Commands & Colors: Samurai Battles is a wargame that puts you in command of historical Japanese armies. The game rules are based on the popular Commands & Colors system, and the scenarios included in the game booklet focus on real historical battles. This game definitely has that same C&C feel, but it's a little more complex, with some variables in the dice rolls adding an extra layer of strategy.

However, the game has some flaws that are worth mentioning. The Dragon Cards, which represent supernatural beings and tactical maneuvers, feel somewhat out of place in a game that is marketed as historical. They seem to cater to a certain Western perception of Asian mysticism, which doesn't quite mesh with the historical context of the Sengoku era. The rulebook is also quite confusing and redundant. It seems like the designer included a lot of unnecessary language that doesn't actually affect the game rules, making it difficult to decipher what's important.

I also want to point out that the game's components leave a lot to be desired. Instead of plastic miniatures, GMT uses small wooden blocks with stickers that you need to apply yourself. It's a very tedious process, especially for those with poor eyesight or fine motor skills. Cardboard standees would have been a much better option. The scenario book also has some typos and some scenarios feel repetitive and imbalanced.

Despite these flaws, I still enjoyed playing Commands & Colors: Samurai Battles. The gameplay is solid, and the scenarios provide a good challenge. If you're a fan of the Commands & Colors system and are interested in Japanese history, I would recommend checking this game out. Just be aware that it's not as historically accurate as it could be and the components aren't the best quality.
