Scorpius Freighter
Scorpius Freighter review
I wasn't sure about Scorpius Freighter at first. It seemed like a lot of pieces for a game that felt like a simple "pickup and deliver" concept. I even considered returning it after my first few games. But something clicked. The rules are deceptively simple, leading to a ton of interesting decision points. The best part is that it's quick to play, usually wrapping up in an hour or less. The game is all about choosing actions on the rondels, which is a unique system that I haven't seen elsewhere. Every turn is a balancing act between upgrading your freighter, acquiring resources, and fulfilling contracts.
I especially appreciate the component quality. The freighter boards are thick and sturdy, rivaling games that cost twice as much. And the insert is fantastic! It makes set up and tear down a breeze. The theme is definitely secondary to the mechanics, but I still find it enjoyable. You're a smuggler, dodging government patrols and trying to make a profit. Thematically, the game does a good job of capturing that feeling.
If you're a gamer with a large collection, you might already have something similar to Scorpius Freighter. But for those who are looking for a solid, engaging game with a moderate learning curve, I highly recommend it. It's a fun and fast-paced experience that I keep coming back to.
