Middle-Earth Quest review

Middle-Earth Quest is a game that truly immerses you in the world of Tolkien's Middle-earth. It's set between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, a period of growing darkness where Sauron's influence is spreading. You can either play as a hero, striving to foil Sauron's plans, or as Sauron himself, aiming to dominate Middle-earth.

The game is beautifully crafted with high-quality components, from the detailed board and miniatures to the artwork on the cards. The mechanics are complex but rewarding, with a focus on strategic planning and player interaction. The combat system is particularly clever, using cards for movement and attack instead of dice, adding a layer of depth and tension.

One of the things I appreciate most about Middle-Earth Quest is its asymmetrical gameplay. Sauron plays a completely different game from the heroes, with unique actions, decks, and objectives. This adds a lot of variety and makes each playthrough feel fresh. While the game is definitely on the long side, it never feels drawn out. The pacing is well done, and the tension builds steadily throughout the game.

I do have a few minor complaints. Some players have noted that the plastic figures can be fragile, but Fantasy Flight Games is known for its excellent customer service, and they will happily replace any broken components. The rulebook is a bit daunting at first, but the game rewards those who take the time to learn it. And while the game can be played with two players, it shines with three, providing a more balanced experience.

Overall, Middle-Earth Quest is an exceptional game that I highly recommend to any fan of the Lord of the Rings. It's challenging, strategic, and immersive, offering a truly unique and engaging gaming experience.
