El Caballero review

El Caballero is a captivating strategy game that, while sharing a name with El Grande, offers a distinct and engaging experience. The game throws you into the heart of the New World, following in the footsteps of Columbus as you explore and claim its riches. You'll find yourself carefully placing tiles to gain control of land and sea, meticulously managing your resources of gold and fish, and strategically deploying your Caballeros to secure your dominion.

The core mechanics remind me a bit of Carcassonne, but with a more intricate and tactical depth. It's a constant dance of trade-offs, forcing you to decide whether to prioritize expansion, resource acquisition, or undermining your opponents. Do you go first, securing more Caballeros for the round, or wait for a chance to grab a more strategic tile placement? How much energy do you pour into securing land, which offers double the points, versus claiming valuable sea territories?

The game's dynamic nature can lead to moments of frustration, as hard-won gains can be quickly undone by a well-timed tile placement from a rival. This “attack-or-die” element, while potentially stressful, is what makes El Caballero so exhilarating. It forces players to be constantly on the lookout for opportunities to disrupt their opponents while simultaneously bolstering their own positions.

The game offers a lot of replayability. Each game feels different based on tile draws and player decisions. I especially enjoy the strategic use of Castillos to protect my investments and the ability to build ships for trade and fishing, adding layers of complexity to the gameplay. Overall, El Caballero is a strong contender in the strategy game genre. If you're looking for a game that demands careful planning, strategic thinking, and a healthy dose of competitive spirit, I highly recommend giving El Caballero a try.
