Bios: Megafauna (Second Edition) review

Bios: Megafauna (Second Edition) is a fascinating exploration of the early days of life on land. The game, a sequel to Bios: Genesis, picks up where the previous game left off, with the invasion of land by early life forms. You choose a type of creature (plant, mollusk, insect, or vertebrate) and guide it through the Cambrian period, competing with other players for dominance. The game includes a wide variety of cards that detail the various events, adaptations, and challenges faced by these early organisms, and the game is very much a simulation of the process of evolution.

I really enjoyed the way the game uses its cards to tell the story of early life. The game is steeped in scientific facts, and it’s really enjoyable to read through the cards and learn about the different creatures and events that shaped the course of life on Earth. However, while I found the game intellectually stimulating, it wasn’t a traditional game experience. It’s not about strategy and outwitting your opponents; it’s more about exploring the process of evolution and creating your own unique lineage of creatures.

The game is complex, and the rulebook is extensive. It’s not a game for everyone, but those who are interested in the science of evolution will find it engaging. I also have to mention that the packaging for this game is a bit underwhelming. The box is meant to be used for storage, but it’s not very protective, and it’s not exactly something I would want to display on my shelf.

Overall, Bios: Megafauna (Second Edition) is a unique and thought-provoking game that offers a glimpse into the fascinating world of early life. It’s not a game for everyone, but if you’re a fan of evolution or enjoy games that delve into scientific topics, you’ll likely find it to be a rewarding experience.
