Poseidon
Poseidon review
Poseidon is a fantastic introduction to the 18xx genre for anyone who wants to get their feet wet without diving into the deep end. The game is packed with familiar 18xx mechanics, but it's streamlined and shortened, making it perfect for newcomers. Instead of running a corporation, you control a country and use ships to explore the Aegean Sea, establishing trading posts instead of laying track. The goal, as with all 18xx games, is to become the wealthiest player by the end of the game.
I especially enjoyed the fast-paced gameplay. Unlike other 18xx games that can drag on for hours, Poseidon typically wraps up in just two. This made it a great choice for my wife, who isn't always up for long gaming sessions. Even though it's streamlined, Poseidon still retains the strategic depth and tactical maneuvering that makes 18xx so captivating. You'll be constantly trying to outwit your opponents and build the most profitable trade routes.
One thing I did find a bit repetitive is the game's tendency to follow predictable patterns. It's not as nuanced as a full-fledged 18xx game, but it's still a fun and engaging experience. I also recommend using poker chips for scoring, as the included play money can be a bit cumbersome.
Overall, I highly recommend Poseidon to anyone who enjoys 18xx games, or who is curious to explore the genre. It's a great entry point, and it's sure to please both experienced and novice gamers. I can't wait to see what other 18xx-inspired games come out in the future.
